Magic in the Maldives
A week spent in one of our favourite destinations in the world. Although only a speck on the map, the Maldives more than makes up for its size, in its beauty. Over 1000 atolls make up this majestic place and we spent a week on a tiny local island named Thulusdhoo, a short ferry ride from the capital of Male.
The island itself is so small you can see the sunrise on one side of the island and just a short walk to the other side to watch sun drop below the horizon, stopping for swims and snacks along the way. It’s like a little safe haven, the streets are made up of white sand, it’s super clean, there are no big fancy resorts inundating the place and the locals welcome you with a warm smile and a wave.
Coral Inn was where we stayed – with only 14 boutique rooms you certainly get well looked after. Views of the sparkling sea from your balcony and the most incredible Maldivian food on request (our favourite was Mas Huni which we ate for breakfast every single day). It’s a local dish made up of tuna, coconut, onion and chilli and eaten with freshly made roshi flatbread.
There is so much to do on this island, but we were there for one thing. To find waves and we were in the perfect spot. Every single morning we jumped on the boat to check all the waves at the different spots – even though we could already see the conditions from our balcony at Coral Inn. Cokes is so close you can see it, and Chickens is the left hander just across the channel that we surfed regularly. We also got to surf Ninjas, which is our favourite wave every single day. The currents and wind worked in our favour the whole week and because it was the start of the season we got to surf it to ourselves every day. It was a dream come true.
The travel agency The Ocean Spell organised everything for us, making the trip an absolute breeze. They are surf travel specialists so whatever you are looking for, they can cater the trip to suit your needs.
