Join Wolfgang Nyvelt in the Alps in his latest snow film where he puts our newest Billabong Adventure Division Snow gear to the test, 'Fulcrum.' Shot close to home, this project was a great reminder that adventure is closer than you think. In Wolle's case, right in his own backyard.
The title, Fulcrum, meaning a pivot or a hub, is Wolle's reference to surfing, which is what inspired him to build his own snowboard shapes and create Äsmo Boards: snow surfboards or pow surfboards. In his search for new shapes, he looked back into the past to get a glimpse into the future, rediscovering concepts which often have roots in or can be traced back to surfing.
Wolle and David Vladyka, Fulcrum's filmmaker, were inspired by a quote from Marcel Proust in the making of their project:
"The only true voyage of discovery, the only fountain of eternal youth, would be not to visit strange lands but to possess other eyes, to behold the universe through the eyes of another, of a hundred others, to behold the hundred universes that each of them beholds, that each of them is." – Marcel Proust
This concept helped Wolle think differently about his snowboard shapes and to not get stuck on the same ideas, freed himself of stubborn thinking, and encouraged him to maintain an open mind to connect with nature in new ways. In today's age of social media inundation, a lot of times you can feel like everyone else is scoring better snow or waves than you. And sometimes, this makes us miss what is right in front of us. Traveling and exploring is an essential part of the journey, but it can start in your own backyard.
"To me, that is Adventure Division." – Wolfgang Nyvelt
